Tips to Make Summer Reading a Breeze!

School is out, but that doesn't mean that learning has to stop! Enjoy this season of sun and fun by keeping good books in the mix. Here are five tips to make summer reading a breeze:

  1. Make it a movie night -- Choose a book that was also made into a movie or tv series. Once your reader has finished the book or series, have an indoor or outdoor movie night. Then, cast your vote on which was best: book or movie?

  2. Have a family book graffiti wall -- Use paper, chalkboard paint or a whiteboard and have your readers post their favorite quotes, illustrations or moments from their books. Watch as it fills up over the summer and then take a "shelfie"!

  3. Pull out the art supplies -- Do an art project that complements the book that you've read. At the end of the summer, you can host a gallery night with family and friends to share your literary and artistic masterpieces.

  4.  Go on a "book" tour -- Read a story about particular places and spaces (museum, library, the beach or park) and then go visit those locations. Make a summer "itinerary" of what you will read and where you will go.

  5. Act it out -- Turn your favorite story into a production. Let your readers create costumes, props and a set and then "action!" You can find many classic stories that have been adapted to reader's theater online.
